10:00-10:40 Fundraising Strategy, Captable, and Dilution

Founder’s Prep work: the estimate number of your round size and valuation, current captable

How big should your round be? How do you calculate your valuation? In this session, we will guide you through understanding your financial metrics, setting the right valuation, and avoiding pitfalls like excessive dilution. Structuring your cap table right from the start is critical to long-term success! 

  • Round Size: How to decide the right round size for your startup based on milestones.

  • Traction: What key metrics to track and present to investors, and how investors interpret it.

  • Valuation Calculation: Approaches for calculating valuation at different stages.

  • Cap Table Structure: How to manage dilution and maintain a founder-friendly cap table.

Speaker: Nathan Alexander

Nathan joined AppWorks in 2024 as an Associate in the Southeast Asia Arm, dedicated to meeting and supporting founders in the region. He brings forth over 7 years of experience in startup advisory, investments and M&A. He started his career at PwC Indonesia where he was first exposed to the investment world and developed his initial acumen for analyzing companies. In 2021, Nathan moved to the venture capital industry, taking on the position of Senior Analyst at Alpha JWC. In his most recent role, Nathan served as the Head of Investments for Telkomsel Ventures where he focused on sourcing startups and underwriting investments for Telkomsel, Indonesia’s largest telecom operator. Nathan majored in Finance at Prasetiya Mulya University, graduating with a Bachelor of Economy. Outside of work, he enjoys watching football (soccer) matches and fostering meaningful connections with friends.

Speaker: Michelle Lin

Michelle is an Analyst covering investments and community building under the Southeast Asia Arm. Before joining the team, she worked as an assistant manager at Deloitte Financial Advisory, where she helped close various cross-border and local M&A deals successfully. Michelle graduated with a Bachelor’s in Accounting from National Taiwan University and received a Master of Management Studies Degree from Duke University. During college, she was the minister of student activities at College of Management Student Association and was active at the Pop Dance Club. Outside the office, she enjoys hiking amongst many outdoor activities, as well as exploring new things in life.

Speaker: Joseph Chan

Joseph is a Partner who joined in 2013 and has since covered our “kitchen” — portfolio management, operations and advising startups on finance and fundraising. He is also in charge of connecting the ecosystems between Japan and Taiwan. Prior to AppWorks, Joseph spent 11 years with the CID Group, a Greater China leading venture firm, where he helped raise US$575M across multiple funds and headed portfolio management. Prior to that, Joseph served as a Manager of Backbone Network at Gigamedia, a NASDAQ-listed broadband ISP. Joseph earned his Master in Agriculture Machinery Engineering from National Taiwan University. He is native in both Mandarin and Japanese.
