​Hiring through Speaking

​At this stage of your company's growth, hiring becomes more difficult. We often rely on recruiting firms or use spreadsheets to make it a numbers game.

​Instead, I propose a different approach that appeals to the human spirit of your target hires. Get out there and start talking.

​Humans are drawn to stories. Consider that even the most expensive staff engineer will work for free on something they are passionate about. I'm not suggesting you underpay people, but let's think about why people work.

​They want to work with someone or for a cause that makes a difference in their lives and adds meaning.

​Public speaking is important, but you may wonder who would want to hear what you have to say. Overcoming this challenge takes practice.

​Public speaking is a skill that requires practice to master. CTOs may not have had many opportunities to develop their speaking skills, especially if they have focused on technical work.

​You may be busy and not have time to devote to honing your speaking skills due to urgent tasks and priorities.

​Break down technical jargon to make complex ideas understandable to non-technical people. If you can't do it, that's not a problem. Seek feedback from trusted friends who care about your talks and how you come across.

​CTOs may have different priorities and may not see public speaking as a priority compared to technical work. However, by prioritizing the development of speaking skills and investing time and effort, CTOs can overcome these challenges and become effective communicators.
